Afrikaya Drum Circlesinvolve not only drums and other percussion instruments from around the world but also other instruments that complement the free-form rhythm produced by the circle. This includes the guitar.
Dancers are more than welcome to come along as drum and dance are very much linked as part of the West African culture. Tracey, Sadie and Christine, belly dancers, are frequent attendees. African dance is regularly included under the guidance of Roz Bradley-Sylvester or Tracey Roberts who have been taught African dance by dancers of the Guinea Sousou people who are living in The Gambia. Particular Djembe rhythms and specific dances are practiced in harmony to tell a story from an African tradition.
Several of our drummers have trained over the last few years with master drummers from Guinea Conakry and are happy to share their knowledge with you.
