News Update
November 2011 - all the compressed bricks are now ready for the building. The Mango tree protectors have been hand made and put in place. The solar run bore hole pump is now working.

We had a very useful meeting with the Imam, the Alkalo [Village Chief], Trustees and parents. We are all drumming the same rhythm.








31 August 2011 -
perimeter wall complete and it has been plastered. Water is available to the village - although the tap was stolen and had to be replaced (now secure). The making of compressed earth bricks (to build the school) has started.

12 July 2011 -
work progresses on water supply and the temporary perimeter wall. Into rainy season now so work will have to slow down.

20 June 2011
- at last the tank arrives to hold water from the bore hole. As soon as the door is fitted to the building and the pumping equipment in place, the water will be accessible to the villagers.

                               

18 June 2011 - work progresses on digging the foundations for the perimeter wall. The villagers were working in full sun with temperatures of 35.


15 June 2011 - temporary room for pumping equipment almost complete and all the bricks now made for the temporary perimeter wall. We were advised by the villagers that if we dont have a perimeter wall, someone will just start farming or building on the land.

Also tree roots removed from dead tree that was cut down. This alone took 3 days work.

                                                                                 
 
 
23 April 2011 - the villagers are making bricks to build a room to house the borehole (to protect the pumping equipment) and a wall around the perimeter of the land.


1 April 2011 - the borehole is finished, the villagers will soon have clean water. 


13th March 2011- the start of drilling on the proposed school site for a borehole to provide the villagers with clean water.

11th March 2011 - the religious leaders of New Yundum led the villagers in prayers to bless the Afrikaya land and the future for the school.


 
 

12th February 2011 - some of Afrikaya's trustees joined the villagers in New Yundum to hold a 'tree planting ceremony' on the site of the proposed school. This was both to replace 2 trees that had to be cut down and to provide shade for the school playground. 

   



                                                                                         

18 January 2011 - Afrikaya now has charitable status in The Gambia and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Gambian Education Dept. 

December 2010 - A local PTA has been appointed, comprising of 6 parents living within the school community in New Yundum.

August 2010 -
Wonderful News! Afrikaya is now the proud owner of land (30 x 60 metres) in New Yundum on which to build the school.

We are now full steam ahead to build and create our school using ECO FRIENDLY resources.  We have a strong team of volunteers both in the UK and the Gambia offering their time and expertise for FREE.  All donations go direct to the school and NOTHING ELSE!
